Getting into the swing

I am really sorry about the copying errors in the homework notebook. If we can't get it all straightened out this week I may just make new complete copies for anyone who needs one. If you are one of the people with missing pages, please go through and let me know what you are missing. (There is a note about this in your child's folder.) I think when I fed the original through the automatic feeder of the copy machine it must have been grabbing two pages at a time or something.

Your children are really getting into the swing of things here at school. We've had a very good week so far. The pace is picking up because more students are understanding what to do, which also helps with those who get bored easily.

In our ERI reading we have covered the letters/sounds for m, p, and started f today. Reading Mastery the students are learning a lot of sounds and different groups are in different places so it is harder to update you on that program. In phonics we are working on "h" this week. We have done "l," "o," "g," and now "h." Next week we do "t" so I have already begun to introduce it. This is great because we can do many words with these letters. Log, hog, hot, tot and with the "a" we learned in Reading Mastery we can read lag, hag, gag, and hat. It is fun to take the homework flash cards and use the letters we have learned and help your child to make words to sound out and read.

In math we have been working on the numbers 1, 2, and 3. We are currently learning 4 and will start 5 later this week. You might want to help your child practice writing the numbers. That seems to be the hardest part. We are also learning how things are the same and different. We have sorted objects by color and size, and are practicing the color names. Most students already know the colors but learning to color things the correct colors is a hard thing to remember.

In Vocabulary our new words are drenched (completely wet), gorgeous (very beautiful), vain (someone too proud), linger (staying too long someplace or being too slow), peculiar (strange, unusual, or weird). Next week's words are glace, timid, frantic, reluctant, and intimidated. Please use all of our vocabulary words with your child whenever you can and encourage him/her to use them also.
