Regular Weeks

It will be nice to have five regular weeks in a row before we have the short Thanksgiving week. It is always hard for some students to have short weeks because then they have to get into a schedule again.

This upcoming week in Phonics we will be studying the letters and sounds "a" and "n." We have already learned l, o, g, h, t, and p. In the next two weeks we will be adding m, i, and s, along will the "ee, double ee always says /ee/." This will allow us to learn a lot of new words, such as, see, sleep, tree, and free. We also can read log, hog, top, hop, got, pop, pot, hot, lot, tot, pat, hat, tap, gag, lag, nap, tan, pan, on, not, mop, and mom.

A fun game to play with the the flash cards is to write a word ending on a card (such as, "op," "ot," "ap," "og," or "at"). Stack the lower-case consonants upside-down on the table. The first player draws a consonant and puts it before the word ending. He/she reads the word to see if it is a real word or not. If he/she makes a word then he/she gets a point. The next player draws a consonant to see if he/she can make a word. The person who makes the most words wins.

In ERI reading we have covered the letters and sounds m, f, c, t, p, and s. Adding these letters to those in Phonics, we have covered a LOT of letters and sounds. Please continue to practice letter recognition and sounds at home, in the store, in the car, or where ever you see words.

Another thing to practice with your child is the first sound of words. This is something that some children do very well but others have a hard time with. Also, start practicing sounding out short words. First sounds and word segmentation are two things your child will be tested on by the district in December.

Along with the normal homework sheet, this week I am sending home a small book for your child to read. He/she may keep the book but after your child reads the book, please sign the paper on the front and send the paper back. There will also be a list of words for your child to read.

After two short weeks where we didn't do vocabulary it will be fun to get back to learning new words. Our vocabulary words all sound like adventure words this week. In fact, one of the words is "adventure." The others are soar, glide, roam, and journey.

In math we are counting, recognizing, and writing the numbers 0-9. We will also be learning about more, less, same, one more, and one less.

This should be another wonderful week of learning for your children!
