Nothing like waiting until the week is mostly over to update you on what we are doing. :-)
In Phonics this week we are studying "m." Since we already learned this in our two reading groups, it is pretty easy for most students. Some are still having trouble transferring what they learned in a reading group to seeing it someplace new. We are also reading two- and three-letter words. If your child struggles with reading small words that are easy to sound out, please practice with him/her. Remember that we have only learned the vowels "a," "o," and will be learning "i." One way to know if your child is having trouble is when he/she reads the little books (I am sending one home on Thursday) that I send home from time to time. He/she needs to read it three times to one person or to three different people. The first time through if he/she really struggles then have him/her practice a lot of small words whenever you can. (Example of words he/she should be able to read are things like pat, sat, mat, cat, fat, hat, mom, man, fan, nap, cap, lap, log, hog, dog, fog, and when we learn "i," sit, hit, lit, pit, fit, hid, lid.)
In math we are studying numbers 0-9. Your child should be able to write and recognize the digits 0-9 out of order. We are also learning more, less, same, equal, next to, between, and first.
This week we have been able to make some puppets to go with Halloween but also that represent letters. We did jack-o-lantern for "j," witch for "w," and tomorrow will do vampire for "v."
We are making two math books this week. One is about pumpkins and use the math words over, under, left, and right. This book some of the students can read! The other is a counting book that uses Halloween characters. We are having a lot of fun with both books.
I hope the rest of the week and the weekend goes well for you and your children.
